In today’s look back to Sheffield in times gone by, we venture back 35 years to what was a memorable year for the city.
The year started off with a thick blanket of snow,
Following its completion in 1990, Don Valley Stadium hosted the World Student Games with an opening ceremony attended by Princess Anne in July
That wasn’t it for Royal ventures to the Steel City that month as Princess Diana and Prince Phillip also visited the city.
After the closure of Sheaf Valley Baths, Ponds Forge Sports and Swimming Complex opened to great fanfare, it was also a key element of the World Student Games taking place in the city.
Sheffield Wednesday had a year of double celebrations. The first was the club's 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Wembley in the Rumbelows League Cup Final in April 1991, followed by promotion to the top flight at the end of the 1990/91 season.
25-years after being opened by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1966, Hyde Park flats, a massive 1960s brutalist social housing complex was demolished.
What do you remember about life in Sheffield in 1991? Do you recognise any of the faces featured here? Did you attend any of the events taking place?
Take a look at the gallery from what was a momentous year for the city and its residents. If you have a story to share from that year, I’d love to hear it. Send me an email.
