These photos capture a different era of shopping, before e-commerce decimated the UK’s high streets.
They feature many of the most popular shops of the 80s and 90s, from major national and international brands to much-loved Sheffield independent stores.
BHS, Debenhams and C&A are just some of the big-name casualties pictured in this trip down memory lane, with Dolcis shoes and Dixons electronics among the other fallen high street giants featured.
Cole Brothers department store and Redgates toy shop are two of the most-missed Sheffield businesses of the 80s and 90s, along with Sugg Sport.
You might also remember shopping at the Army & General Stores, on Norfolk Street; Western Jeans Company, on Fargate; and Impulse records, on Cambridge Street, which are among the many other stores featured in this retro gallery.
This nostalgic tour of Sheffield’s shopping past takes you not just around the city centre, but also out to the suburbs, including Hillsborough, Manor and Firth Park.
The nostalgic images take us back to the period when plastic carrier bags replaced paper ones, and we filled them guilt-free, oblivious to the harm they would cause our planet.
It was also the time when supermarket loyalty cards were first introduced, with Tesco launching its Clubcard in 1995; and when barcodes, having first been used in 1979, really started speeding things up at the checkout.
How many of the shops pictured do you remember, and which lost Sheffield store would you most like to bring back?
