Sheffield retro: 35 photos show how Crystal Peaks has changed since the 80s, including lost shops

It’s Meadowhall’s little sister, just a few miles up the road, pulling in more than seven million visitors a year.

Crystal Peaks opened two years before Meadowhall, in 1988. It cost £30 million to build, and featured a miniature alpine world complete with waterfalls.

These photos show just how much the popular shopping centre has changed since the 80s.

They take you back to the 80s, 90s and noughties, when the retail world was very different.

You might remember some of the lost shops and restaurants pictured, including Toymaster and The Fast Lane.

This retro photo gallery also features Crystal Peaks’ original cinema, from its opening in 1988 to the last screening in 2003.

As well as ordinary shoppers, these nostalgic images capture some of the mall’s many famous visitors over the years, including Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards, Sheffield United players, and Coronation Street stars Samia Smith and Kate Ford.

Shop staff and market stall holders are pictured too, in this trip down memory lane.

How many of the old shops and stalls, and the characters who worked there, do you remember? And what do you think of how Crystal Peaks has changed over the last 37 years?
