In the 1980s, Grenoside Hospital in Sheffield was deeply affected by the mass 1982 National Health Service (NHS) industrial pay dispute. Local healthcare professionals took strike action (alongside wider regional strikes) as a result of this dispute. Grenoside Hospital would eventually close in 1989.

Fast forward to 1991, Helen Sharman, who was born in the area and attended Grenoside Junior and Infant School, would become the first woman to visit the Mir space station in May 1991.

Grenoside began moving past its historical quarrying and file-cutting roots, the community turned its attention toward heritage preservation with the founding of the Grenoside and District Local History Group in 1997. Originating from an adult education class, the initiative aimed to safeguard historic photographs, oral memories, and archives of the area.

A year later, the local community mobilised a significant tree-planting campaign on the Grenoside Recreation Ground, successfully planting 1,000 young trees to boost the suburb’s local greenery.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, local social life flourished across the area. Classic public houses such as the Angel Inn and Old Red Lion remained popular gathering spots, while the Grenoside Working Men's Club enjoyed its prime as a central venue for local evening entertainment and community gatherings.

This was one of many local traditions that the community upheld, including the Annual Grenoside Gala, which celebrated the summer months.

Another village tradition was that of the Grenoside Chase, an enduring athletic and social event that took place in the community every August.
