Featured prominently in this collection is Redgates, undoubtedly one of Sheffield's all-time favorite stores, which welcomed generations of eager shoppers on Furnival Gate at the top of The Moor until its closure in 1988.
Celebrated as the finest toy shop outside of London, its vast selection and magical atmosphere earned it the affectionate title of the ‘Yorkshire Disneyland’.
Our gallery looks back on historic photographs of toy shops extending all the way back to the early 1900s. There are some we haven’t included like Wilson Gumpert, Joel’s and Roger Gould's Toys at Banner Cross – But each was magnificent in its own right (and era).
Personally, I fondly recall being granted 15 minutes to marvel at the treasures inside Redgates, though nothing quite matched the wonder of Beatties for me. The spectacular display of remote-controlled models lined up high on the shelves felt like an unattainable dream – I was truly heartbroken when it finally closed its doors.
Which of these historic Sheffield toy shops do you miss the most, and what favorite memories do these pictures bring back for you?

17. Buzz Lightyear
Toy Story and its sequels about the secret life of children's playthings have charmed youngsters and adults alike since Woody and co first hit cinema screens in 1996. For all the success of the films themselves, Disney has famously earned more from the merchandise. Much like in the original film, Buzz Lightyear, with his laser light, flick-out wings and 'to infinity and beyond' catchprahse, was the toy everyone wanted.
