A look back at Mosborough: 23 retro photos capturing life in Sheffield where Harry Maguire grew up

This retro gallery takes you back in time as we take a look at life in Mosborough and its surrounding areas over the past 60-years

Once a Derbyshire village, Mosborough was transferred to Sheffield in 1967.

Located six miles south-east of Sheffield and near Eckington across Moss Brook, it is well known for its close proximity to Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre and Drakehouse Retail Park (just don’t mention those speed bumps), as well as surrounding areas like Halfway and Westfield.

Mosborough’s origins trace back to the 9th century as ‘Moresburgh’, meaning ‘fortified place on the moor’, and it appeared in the 1086 Domesday Book.

Human activity in the area dates to the Neolithic era, with Germanic settlements following the Roman period.

The area features the Grade II-listed Mosborough Hall, built in the 17th century with history extending to the 12th century.

By the late 16th century, Mosborough developed a reputation for sickle and scythe smithing, followed later by coal mining and brickmaking.

Today, the village preserves elements of its historical heritage and is dotted with traditional stone-built cottages, a village green and the local landmark pubs such as The Ridgeway Arms, The Alma and The British Oak, which up until recently was a popular location for its annual fireworks display.

It’s also the place where England international and Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, grew up.

Take a look at this gallery to see how much Mosborough has changed over the years. What do you remember and miss about life in the area? Can you recognise anyone you know?
