The 24-year-old has played two Championship games for the Blues since completing a move from Scotland towards the end of the transfer window, but twisted his ankle in training and therefore had to sit out their defeat to Millwall earlier this week.

It remains to be seen whether he’ll be deemed fit enough to line up at Hillsborough come tomorrow afternoon, but Aitor Karanka will be desperate to have everybody available given their current plight of picking up just one win in their last 14 games.

Meanwhile, the club’s captain, Harlee Dean, is also a doubt for the encounter after needing stitches in his ankle after the Millwall match, and – like Cosgrove – he will be assessed in the build-up to Saturday’s game at S6.

Speaking to the media, Karanka said, “Harlee Dean couldn’t train on Thursday because he had stitches in his ankle so he couldn’t train. He has a lot of pain.

“Sam Cosgrove couldn’t train, he twisted his ankle last Tuesday and the medical department is checking him out to see if we can have him back as soon as possible… The rest of the players are ready.”

In other news, Marc Roberts is back available after serving his three-match ban following a red card at Wycombe Wanderers earlier this month.
