Verified students can get household broadband from £20 a month, with a faster option costing just £1 more before scheduled April increases
Forget the washing-up, in some student houses, an argument can end with something rather more disruptive: discovering your Wi-Fi password no longer works.
In a recent survey, a third of students said the password had been deliberately changed or withheld following a disagreement over bills or how the connection was being used.
The findings come as mobile network operator Vodafone has launched a student broadband deal starting at £20 a month for the whole household.
Aimed specifically at students, the deal can be split equally between four housemates, which would work out at £5 each.
According to Vodafone’s research, 55% of students said broadband had caused tense moments in their shared accommodation.

Some 13% pointed to housemates spending long periods gaming, while 8% had been annoyed by someone using too much bandwidth.
More than half of undergraduates, 54%, said they did not feel ready for the practicalities of shared student accommodation.
More than a quarter of students surveyed, 26%, had turned to their parents for help setting up broadband. A third, 34%, needed help understanding a utility bill.
Laundry and cooking prompted calls home too, with 20% seeking advice on washing temperatures and the same proportion asking for help preparing a meal.
Meanwhile, 22% had turned to their parents for emotional support.

Almost two-thirds, 63%, underestimated food spending, while 50% were caught out by accommodation costs and 24% underestimated utility bills.
Vodafone’s 12-month student 5G broadband plans start at £20 a month for speeds up to 50Mbps, or £21 for up to 150Mbps, after the £2 student discount.
For four people sharing equally, those initial prices work out at £5 or £5.25 each. They are shares of a household bill, rather than individual £5 contracts.
Both prices rise on April 1, 2027: the 50Mbps plan becomes £23.50 a month and the 150Mbps option £24.50. The student discount ends after the initial 12 months.
Students must verify their status through GoCertify, Student Beans or UNiDAYS to access the offer.
