Christmas may still be months away, but Sainsbury's current wine deal could be a good excuse to start building a festive drinks stash early.
Christmas might still feel a long way off, but in reality it’s less than three months away, so there are some festive essentials that are worth thinking about before December arrives.
If you’re planning to host family or friends this year, Sainsbury’s has a wine offer that could help you to build up your drinks cupboard now.
Sainsbury’s is currently running a buy three, save 25% offer on selected Taste the Difference wine, champagne and sparkling wine for Nectar customers. The promotion runs until mid October, giving shoppers a good number of days to take advantage.
The best part about stocking up on wine is that you don’t need to worry about finding room in the freezer or squeezing another box into an already crowded fridge. If you have somewhere suitable to store bottles, whether it’s a cupboard, a cellar, or a garage, you can simply put them aside and have a selection ready when the Christmas parties, family get-togethers and festive meals start rolling around.
In addition, because the Sainsbury’s offer lets you mix and match selected bottles, you don't necessarily have to buy three of exactly the same wine. The promotion applies to selected Taste the Difference wine, champagne and sparkling wine, so you can choose different bottles depending on what you think you’ll need over Christmas and who will be visiting.
Start with a bottle of sparkling
If Christmas at your house usually involves a bottle of something fizzy, this could be a good place to start.
Sainsbury’s Ellercombe English Sparkling Wine is £22 a bottle and is included in the buy three, save 25% Nectar offer. It’s a traditional-method English sparkling wine made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with green apple aromas, brioche notes and citrus flavours.
Three bottles would give you something ready for Christmas Day, New Year's Eve or simply a festive gathering where you want to serve something a little more special.
Or choose a wine for Christmas dinner
For the main meal, a fuller red can be another bottle worth putting aside.
The Sainsbury's Bordeaux Superieur Merlot is £9.50 and is also included in the promotion. Sainsbury's describes it as having blackcurrant, liquorice and sweet oak and tobacco notes, while the product page recommends consuming it within a year of purchase.
That makes it the sort of bottle that can comfortably be bought during the autumn and saved for a Christmas meal, provided it is stored according to the bottle's instructions.
Don't forget the smaller celebrations
The festive period isn't just about Christmas dinner, either. There are drinks to buy for Boxing Day, unexpected visitors, pre-Christmas get-togethers and New Year's Eve.
That's why buying three different bottles makes sense. You could pick a sparkling wine for celebrations, a red for Christmas dinner and a white or rosé for another occasion, rather than ending up with three identical bottles sitting in the cupboard.
There's also champagne included in the promotion, giving shoppers the option of putting away something for a particularly special occasion. Sainsbury's Blanc De Noirs Champagne, Taste the Difference, for example, is currently £14 for a 37.5cl bottle and is included in the buy three, save 25% offer.
At a time of year when the cost of Christmas can quickly add up, spreading some of the shopping across September and October could also make the December grocery bill feel a little less daunting.
The offer is available for deliveries up to and including Tuesday October 13, although there are some important exclusions. Selected bottles need to meet the minimum price threshold, and the promotion excludes wine under £6 in England and Northern Ireland, wine under £9 in Wales, 200ml bottles and under, house wine, fortified and boxed wine, Taste the Difference meal-deal wine and gift sets. The offer also excludes Sainsbury's supermarkets in Scotland and Locals, with a maximum of 36 bottles per customer.
So, if you're already thinking about what you'll need for Christmas, now could be a good time to start a small festive drinks stash. Rather than buying everything in one expensive December shop, three bottles at a time could gradually get the wine cupboard ready for the big day.
If you're a Nectar customer, you can browse Sainsbury's Taste the Difference wine selection here and choose three bottles to save 25% while the offer is running.
