Sainsbury's has opened its Christmas Food to Order range, with turkey starting at just £7.20 and more than 100 festive dishes available to reserve for collection before Christmas.

Christmas might still feel a little way off, but Sainsbury's has already opened the doors on its Christmas Food to Order range, and one price in particular caught our eye - Turkey starts at just £7.20.

The supermarket's Christmas ordering service is now live, with more than 100 festive dishes available to reserve ahead of the big day, including whole turkeys, crowns, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, desserts and even a complete Christmas dinner in a box.

The headline-grabber is a Grove Fresh Turkey weighing between 3kg and 3.99kg, which starts at £7.20 and is listed as serving between six and eight people.

There is one important catch: that particular bargain bird is only available in Northern Ireland. Depending on its weight, the price rises to £9.58, but at £2.40 per kg it is still an eye-catching option for anyone eligible to order it.

Elsewhere, shoppers can still find surprisingly keen prices in the Sainsbury's Christmas turkey range. A British Bronze Turkey weighing between 4kg and 4.99kg starts at £36 and serves eight to 10 people, while a 5kg to 5.99kg version starts at £45 and is listed as serving 10 to 12.

And it isn't just about the turkey. Sainsbury's currently has more than 100 Christmas Food to Order products listed, with options ranging from the main event to the bits that usually turn Christmas Eve into a frantic trolley dash.

A Taste the Difference Christmas Dinner in a Box costs £50 and serves four, while goose fat potatoes are £6, potato dauphinoise is £6.50 and cauliflower cheese is £7.50.

Old English pigs in blankets cost £10 and a festive gravy and sauce selection is £8.

There are plenty of more indulgent options in the festive food range too, including premium turkey crowns, beef centrepieces and a Turkey & Duck Two Bird Roast for £30.

The beauty of the service is that you can get some of the Christmas planning out of the way now rather than hoping your local supermarket still has the right-sized turkey when everyone else descends on the chilled aisle in December.

Shoppers can use the Sainsbury's Christmas Food to Order website to enter their postcode, find participating stores and reserve a collection for the days leading up to Christmas.

That could prove particularly useful for anyone cooking for a crowd, because many of the larger turkeys are sized for 10, 12 or even 18 people.

Of course, the £7.20 turkey won't be ideal for everyone, but it is a reminder that Christmas dinner doesn't necessarily have to start with a £70 centrepiece.

And with the full Sainsbury's festive food range now open for orders, anyone who likes having Christmas sorted before December even arrives can already start ticking off the most important item on the shopping list.
