Police threaten Sheffield parents with Covid fines if their kids break lockdown rules

The Sheffield South East neighbourhood policing team issued the warning because of groups of youths still congregating on the streets of Woodhouse despite strict rules in place aimed at reducing the spread of coronavirus.

The team said some of the youths are committing anti-social behaviour, with reports of snowballs being thrown at passing cars during the recent cold spell.

In a warning to parents, the team said: “Patrols in the Woodhouse area are ongoing. Despite the Covid lockdown restrictions and unfavourable weather conditions we are still seeing groups of youths congregating on the streets.

“Some are engaging in anti-social behaviour such as throwing snowballs at passing traffic.

“This will not be tolerated and we will pursue these individuals and deal with the perpetrators accordingly.

“Just a thought: Do you know where your children are tonight? Who they are with? They really shouldn't be leaving home without a good reason. We are still in lockdown.

“Did you know that if a child under 18 years of age continually breaches Covid restrictions and parents are made aware by police, parents can be issued with a fine.”

Fines of £200 can be issued for a first lockdown breach, which increases to £400 for a second and then doubles thereafter for each additional breach up to a maximum of £6,400.

The organisers of illegal gatherings, such as house parties, can be fined £10,000.

Those attending gatherings of more than 15 people can be fined £800.
