Police probe into Sheffield flat fire continues

A police probe is continuing today into a blaze which left people trapped in a block of flats in Sheffield.

It is believed that the fire was started deliberately, and three men are in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

The block of flats on Batemoor Road, Batemoor, suffered extensive damage in the blaze, which started on the middle floor.

An inspection is due to be carried out today to establish what repairs are needed and whether anyone can return.

Firefighters rescued three occupants and one terrified dad, Salar Omar, wrapped his 18-month-old daughter, Julia, in a curtain and lowered her to the ground through a window in a bid to save her life.

But nobody was injured in the incident.

The flats have been sealed off and under police guard today while a crime scene investigation team examined the block.
