With rising energy prices and an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, many people across Sheffield are cutting back on their expenses, including their energy bills, which might leave them feeling the cold this winter. To combat this, ‘warm hubs’ have been set up  in the form of public venues  opening their doors to allow people access to a warm space free of charge.

Working together with voluntary and community organisations across the city, Sheffield City Council said it is providing help, advice and support to the people through ‘welcome spaces’ as well as supporting them in terms of money issues, energy costs, and paying bills. These spaces include libraries, community centres, churches and other places offering a warm welcome, free to use for anyone struggling to heat their home.

These spaces can be accessed by people so they can ask for help, or just call in to be warm, have a cup of tea and a chat in their local communities, with other public buildings to be added to the network of welcome places as winter approaches.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “These are difficult times for many people who are facing hardship this winter. We’ve put in place a range of measures and support and I’d urge anyone who is worrying about how they are going to manage, to contact us.

“You are not alone; many people are worried about paying their bills through the winter and beyond and we want you to feel supported. We have people who are trained to listen, advise on what support is available to you and provide what you need. I’m grateful for the support and expertise of the voluntary, community and faith organisations in the city. Their contribution is invaluable.”

Sheffield City Council has joined forces with Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS), which has set up an interactive map of 74 warm spaces across the city, accessible to struggling members of the public. The map details the locations people can go to get information or support, or to offer to volunteer.
