Yorkshire South Premier Cricket League begins

Aston Hall and Whitely Hall, Cleethorpes and Barnsley and Hallam and Wickersley took four points apiece for their games being cancelled.

Collegiate made the trip along the Parkway to newly-promoted Whiston Parish Church.

Having won the toss, made the easy decision to insert their hosts. After a steady start, Rob Shaw picked up both openers, Andrew Tomlinson for 27 and Gareth Davis for 15, leaving Whiston 51-2 in the 15th over. The weather deteriorated at that point and the game was abandoned.

Further east, Doncaster made a promising start back in the top league in South Yorkshire, taking on Appleby Frondingham in Scunthorpe.

Having been put in to bat by their hosts, Doncaster made steady progress, with contributions all through the line up. James Stuart opened with 75, Ali Waqas posted 61* and with Duncan Heath (29) and Jack Shutt (27) also impressing, the visitors posted 244-4 from their full 50 over allocation. The rain that had hit Whiston found its way further east during the tea interval and the home side’s reply never started. The sides took four points each.

One game did get completed as Treeton travelled to double reigning champions Wakefield Thornes. The visitors won the toss and again inserted their opponents. Recognising that the conditions favoured the bowling, Thornes looked to post a competitive score and despite falling to 45-4, thanks in the main to Vinnie Ogden (who finished with 3-62). The middle order found a partnership in Joe Cook (41) and Faisal Irfan (70) who took Thornes through to a competitive 183-7 from 50 overs. Treeton’s reply never got going. The highlight was Muhammed Waheed’s 34 but with only Tom Bates posting another double figure score, Treeton were never in the hunt.
