Thousands of Sheffield Wednesday fans have tonight paid an emotional tribute to a young Owls fan who tragically lost his life earlier this month.
Supporters at Hillsborough for tonight's friendly against Benfica stood to take part in a minute’s applause for Tom Bothamley, who was 13 and had been due to attend the match.
The round of applause in the 13th minute followed a public appeal by his family for Owls fans.
Sheffield Wednesday season ticket holder Tom, who suffered from a heart condition, died suddenly on July 8 and is the third member of his family to lose his life in tragic circumstances.
His father Ryan was also killed by sudden adult death syndrome in 2002, while Thomas’ brother Joshua died aged just 23 months on Christmas Day in 2007.
Tom was a talented footballer who had trials with Manchester United and Wednesday in the past.
Tom’s funeral will take place at St Alban’s Church in Wickersley, Rotherham on Thursday, July 28.
The service will begin at noon.
Friends of Tom have raised over £7,000 to donate to his family towards the costs of his funeral and those attending have been asked to wear blue and white.
