Sheffield bar faces licensing review over alleged assault

Police applied for a review of the licence at Showcase, on John Street, near Sheffield United's Bramall Lane stadium, after violence reportedly erupted there on December 11.

South Yorkshire Police said an 'individual' has been charged in connection with the incident with affray and possession of a bladed article, and that person has been remanded in custody.

A spokeswoman for the force said it was unable to provide the individual's name at this stage.

She said officers had not been able to identify the alleged victim so she could not provide details about the nature of any injuries sustained.

Police applied for a summary review of the licence, with the notice stating: "In the opinion of a senior police officer, the premises are associated with serious crime or serious disorder or both."

A Sheffield Council spokeswoman said the venue's licence had been suspended as an 'interim measure', pending the review hearing.

An application has also been made to review the licence of Sheffield Convenience Store, on West Street, in the city centre.

A council spokeswoman said this was made following test purchase operations carried out at the premises.

She said both reviews were likely to be heard in late January.
