Review of What We Wished For at Crucible Theatre, Sheffield
This show is a fabulous confection of fairy tales woven together, told on a clever stage made out of giant books with seats hidden inside.
A big multi-generational cast from Sheffield People’s Theatre bring lots of energy to the story, about a group of retired fairy tale characters who have to find a way to connect with youngsters when the appearance of a pack of wolves threatens everyone’s safety.
One of the joys of Chris Bush’s clever script is figuring out who’s who from little hints along the way.
The actors get plenty of fun out of the comedy and the original songs and manage to create a darker mood as the wolves’ threat starts to turn people against each other.
This was the best people’s theatre production I’ve seen: it moved along well and the performers only had a few minor glitches.
The fairy tale ending concerns difference and understanding but the saccharine is kept to a minimum, thankfully.
