Vehicles have been left all day long at the small, 19-space car park at Endcliffe, making it difficult for other people to visit the park and shops.

Now the council’s Cabinet has agreed to introduce a three-hour limit and charges, along with pay and display machines, at the car park which is accessed from Rustlings Road.

Paul Billington, the council’s director of culture and environment, said: “We know from evidence from parking staff and businesses that a significant amount is commuter parking.

“This isn’t to generate income, it’s to dissuade people who abuse the system and are not using it as a park, but are using it as a car park.

“We expect this to generate £5,000 a year income and that will directly benefit the park. This will help more people use the park and visit local businesses.”

The Friends of Endcliffe Park group and businesses both support the new restrictions. The charges are in line with Hillsborough, Graves and Millhouses parks which have had pay and display for around three years.

Research by Sheffield Hallam University shows that 49 per cent of visitors to the park are from outside of the immediate area, of which, 42 per cent drive to the site.
