Pubs and clubs in Sheffield are backing a campaign to protect people from sexual harassment during a night out.

The safety drive, launched today, aims to ensure revellers who are feeling unsafe or uncomfortable can discreetly ask staff for help to make sure they get home safely.

Posters are going up across the city encouraging people who are getting unwanted attention or are on a date where something doesn’t feel right to ‘Ask For Angela’ at the bar.

So far, 21 venues are already taking part and more are being encouraged to sign up.

Serena Cavasin, women’s officer at the University of Sheffield’s Student Union, said: “This is a brilliant scheme to help ensure people are safe in bars and venues across the city, including our union.

"If people get in uncomfortable or unsafe situations they will be protected and helped.

“We know people who have had dates they wanted to get out of and Ask For Angela will really help with this. Internet dating, and dating through apps, is common amongst students, so the scheme will be a real help and support.”

Ask For Angela is being introduced to help men and women of all sexual orientations stay safe in the city’s night-spots.

It is being jointly promoted by Sheffield Council, Best Bar None, the Domestic Abuse Coordination Team, Pub Watch, and South Yorkshire Police.

Tracey Ford, Best Bar None coordinator at Sheffield Council, said: “This is about keeping people safe and offering a way for them to ask for help if they’re on a night out and getting unwanted attention or are out on a date and something doesn’t feel right.

"This is particularly important with more people meeting online.

“Sheffield is a great place for a night out. Safety is important to us and all the pubs, clubs and bars taking part, and their response has been brilliant.”
