A play written by a Sheffield writer has its first performance in the city this month.
The story tells how Dean joined the army and Danny joined the Islamic State. One’s from London, the other from Leeds. Bismillah! explores their time together as captive and guard in a basement in Iraq.
This is the first time writer Matthew Greenhough, who grew up in Hillsborough and attended Notre Dame High School, will have his work performed in his home city.
He said: “As a Northern lad, I write plays informed by my experiences growing up in Sheffield, and so it’s phenomenal to finally have the opportunity to share my work with a home crowd, who I know will really respond to what the play has to say!
“I’ve never had my work performed up North before, so I couldn’t be more excited about bringing this play home.
“Yorkshire’s a part of me and so also a massive part of this Bismillah!. It’s a dream come true to perform it to Theatre Deli’s audience.”
The play premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015 and was listed for an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression award.
