The authority used a corporate Twitter feed to highlight some of the town centre's attractions and focused on Rotherham College's Wharncliffe restaurant, Rotherham Theatres and the availability of free car parking.

But it angered Michael Sylvester, an activist who works in the Dalton district to help residents and highlight what he regards as failings in the way the council operates, because it also listed three private businesses.

According to Mr Sylvester's Tweet '“ directed at the authority's communications department and council leader Coun Chris Read '“ one of those had 'very close relations with the Labour party', asking: 'Will all business competitors get a mention'.

The authority responded by stating: 'We chose the venue due to its live music evenings and good food, but happy to consider any other recommendations people have.'
