The Dearne Playhouse has been given funding of almost £10,000 to install LED lighting which will slash its monthly electricity bills by around 70 per cent – and allow them to use the cash to do more work for the community.

Money for the upgrade was provided by the Dearne Area Council, which uses a Barnsley Council budget to support projects which bring benefits to the area.

Some of the savings will allow the group which run the building to carry out other repairs, but also to do more on projects to work with the elderly and young people.

Coun May Noble said the organisation was launching a monthly event for the elderly, screening a film and providing a buffet and entertainment without charge, in an attempt to help tackle social isolation among those of advancing age.

Funding is available to keep the sessions going for a year and there had been a lot of preliminary interest from those who wanted to attend the first session, said Coun Noble.
