Colliery site redevelopment should bring new jobs to community

Hickleton Main pit closed in the 1990s after around a century in operation on the outskirts of Thurnscoe, in Barnsley.

Since then parts of the site have been gradually redeveloped as an industrial estate, with new developments surrounding a plot of land covering just over two hectares at Barrowfield Road, where the headgear once stood.

Now developers Priority Space Ltd want to develop the site with 15 new industrial units, which would be housed in four blocks, making up a courtyard style layout, with parking for 56 cars in the centre and soft landscaping around the edges.

They layout has been designed to make the best use of the site and a report to Barnsley Council, which will decide whether to allow the development, states: “The layout of the units, maximise the net developable area of the site but still allow for all necessary service yards, car parking and access.

“The intention is that all buildings will have their main entrance facing the car parking areas. This allows the building entrances to be readily seen and to maximise security.”

The site would be secured with a fence of 2.1 metres and a sliding gate at the entrance, which could be converted to electrical operation in future.
