O2 and EE both announce roll-out of 5G networks in Doncaster

O2 has now rolled out its coverage to 150 UK towns and cities – with Doncaster among 53 new towns and cities on the list, putting it ahead of its rival EE to become the nation's biggest provider of ultra-fast mobile internet.

The newest generation of mobile communication technology, 5G offers data speeds several times faster than 4G.

Meanwhile, EE has also added Doncaster to its 5G network this week.

It means smartphone users in the town will be able to carry out tasks on their handsets faster and more efficiently, including downloading films and streaming music.

Derek McManus, Chief Operating Officer at O2 said: 'We are delighted with the progress of our 5G rollout and to be able to offer customers in over 150 locations the benefits of our high-speed network.

'Once again we are facing tough lockdown restrictions and we are focused on ensuring we meet the demand for increased network capacity and reliability to keep everyone connected during this time.

'We're also proud of leading the charge from an environmental point of view, with 67% of our estate powered by renewable energy as we work with landlords to encourage usage of more renewable sources.”

Last year, conspiracy theorists claimed 5G phone masts were being used to spread coronavirus, with some phone masts being set on fire as a result of the baseless claims which have been rubbished by technology firms and scientists alike.
