The Owls are the lowest scorers in the Championship and are on a run of three defeats on the spin, leaving many supporters wondering why the Chelsea loanee appears to be so far down the pecking order.

Rookie midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was sent on ahead of the frustrated playmaker in a 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Wednesday evening, though he did come on for the final 13 minutes when the former Manchester City man hobbled out of action.

Wednesday had three shots in the match and only one on target. Their xG rating of 0.11 means that based on the probability of scoring the chances they created, they would have had to play the same game 10 times before scoring.

There doesn't seem to be any sign of an imminent recall for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Izzy Brown.

He arrived in a whirlwind of excitement having been among the Championship’s most creative players while on loan at Luton Town last season and performed well under Garry Monk before a knee injury curtailed his progress.

He barely featured under Tony Pulis and Owls caretaker boss Neil Thompson has given Brown a combined 40 minutes across his 10 league matches in charge, citing a lack of match sharpness as an issue.

Brown has since played in the club’s under-23s in a bid to get him up to speed. It has been 151 days and counting since his last start for Wednesday, in the 2-0 defeat at Bristol City on September 27.

Asked whether there was more to Brown’s absence after the Brentford defeat, Thompson told The Star: “He’s part of the squad and I put the team out that I think is capable of playing the way we want to play and I think you could see that.

“Apart from the goals tonight I think it was the right team to pick tonight in terms of the energy of the team, how they’re trying to play.

“I thought they did that. But still the same issues occur, a lack of chances, a lack of goals, giving away silly goals. It’s at both ends of the pitch.”
