FROM a budding new comic hoping to win an award to budding new buildings hoping... to win an award.

The shortlist for the Sheffield Design gong – which rewards the city’s best architectural projects from the previous five years – is revealed today. And the list proves nothing if not that this is a place of contrasts.

“There are many strong candidates which is great news for everyone who lives here,” says Paul Bedwell, chairman of co-organisers Sheffield Civic Trust.

It is the twin gong of the People’s Choice Award which is voted by the public. The shortlist for that was revealed on this page in April.

The winners of both will be announced at a ceremony at the Showroom cinema on November 27. Vote and details:
