Showboat at the Crucible was simply superb – the Cotton Blossom, of the title, sailed majestically into view, with paddles turning and the Mississippi river flowed around.
Bedecked with bunting and coloured lights it was a recreation of the MGM film opening.
A strong black chorus head by a magnificent Joe, were deservedly applauded.
The setting was a land of cavaliers and cotton, a civilisation gone with the wind.
Michael Xavier was outstanding as Gaylord, in his magnificent portrayal, Rebecca Trehearn as Julie was splendid in her rendition of Bill, Emmanuel Kojo as Joe performed Old Man River in true Paul Robeson style.
A comedic masterpiece in Mel Brooks style came from Allan Corduner as Captain Andy, a vaudeville recreation of divine decadence was presented by Frank and Ellie.
This was a musical not to be missed.
In short, simply breathtaking.
