Corporal punishment

Have your say

It may sound uncanny to today’s kids that at school in the 1940s and ’50s corporal punishment for misbehaving was prevalent, with teachers using the cane made of rattan across the pupils hands or buttocks causing a great deal of pain.

The use of a cane by an adult teacher on a young boy was permitted by the school governors, with girls usually receiving detention.

This could have resulted in long-term problems for the pupils.

If that was to happen today they would be brought before the courts for using brute force against a minor.

I suspect many pupils from that era would have suffered some kind of punishment, myself included.
