A CHILD was in hospital last night after being hit by a car on a busy Sheffield road.

Police and ambulance crews were called to reports of a collision involving a young pedestrian and a vehicle in Leighton Road, Gleadless, at around 4.40pm yesterday.

Paramedics gave the casualty - whose age and gender police were unable to confirm - first aid before transporting the youngster to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for treatment. No other people were injured in the collision.

The drama unfolded outside The Wyvern pub in front of shocked passers-by.

Vin Malone, who lives nearby and witnessed the aftermath, said: “A few of us round here have been saying for weeks there’s going to be an accident there. It’s a busy road on a bus route and kids whizz across it.”

The road was closed to traffic while emergency crews attended the incident.
