Young people's show '˜Pioneer' set to open

The new musical, entitled ‘Pioneer,’ will relive significant events unique to Rotherham - from the arrival of early settlers through to the modern day.

400 children from across the region will take part in the new show’s premier, when it opens today at Magna Science and Adventure Centre at 6pm. There will be another two shows, held tomorrow at 2pm and 6.30pm.

As well as stage-acting and singing, there will be an accompanying 13 piece orchestra and two choirs, all made up entirely of local school children.

Martyn Howells, of Rotherham Music Service, said: “This is the first musical of its kind which tells the story of Rotherham from the perspective of its residents, portrayed by our school children.

“It features original musical written by Rotherham, about Rotherham, for Rotherham, with a modern day twist.

“The children have really engaged with it and they’ve shown great pride in learning about their town, what makes it great and how it has progressed over the course of history.”

Coun Gordon Watson, cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services, said: “Pioneer is showcasing the great talents of our young people and reaffirming why we have some of the best and brightest pupils in the country.

“I hope residents will support our youngsters and attend what I’m sure will be a wonderful few shows.”
