FAST cars and footballers can be a dangerous combination.

And that’s precisely why academy players at both Wednesday and United have been taking part in a pioneering programme aimed at educating young footballers on the importance of road safety awareness.

Drive IT Home road safety visited the both Sheffield clubs’ academies to drive home key information about how to stay safe behind the wheel.

Mick Kingham, of Drive IT Home, stressed the importance of delivering such a hard hitting message.

He said: “A lot of young footballers are thrust into the public domain and often benefit from the riches of football.

“Many young lads have top of the range high powered cars but lack the experience of driving.”

The workshop focused on drink driving, drug driving, distractions such as friends and dashboard gadgets. The Drive It Home team also uses personal testimonies which prove no-one is invincible.

Andrew Cain, also from Drive IT Home, added: “If the players can take something from the presentation then that will go some way in making them safer on our roads.
