Jack Rollett cares for his mum because she has a number of physical and mental health problems’.

These conditions mean she has low energy levels and reduced mobility. She struggles to manage everyday tasks and, with no other support at home, Jack takes on the role as her carer.

Jack, who loves cars, takes on a lot of practical care, including shopping, washing and cleaning. He also keeps his mum company when she is unable to move.

He worries about her during the day when he is at school, which affects his work and his ability to concentrate.

When Sheffield Young Carers (SYC) started supporting Jack, he was struggling to cope with the move from primary up to secondary school.

His support worker helped him to find out more about his mum’s illnesses which helped to reduce his anxiety. He also helped to find Jack and his mum practical ways to manage better, such as doing their shopping online.

Jack’s support worker arranged for him to have a tour of Porsche Centre Sheffield and also be taken on test drive in a Porsche as a treat, to give a break from his caring role and to boost his self-esteem.

Jack thanked SYC for their support.

He said: “I have got out more, I feel confident and I have made lots of new friends. I’ll never forget the Porsche visit.”

There are an estimated 7,300 young carers in Sheffield. Visit www.sheffieldyoungcarers.org.uk for details on how you can help other young carers.
