Leanne Barnes, of Wadsley, was diagnosed with breast cancer aged just 22 but is now in remission thanks to her treatment at the Teenage Cancer Unit at the city’s Weston Park Hospital.

The Marks and Spencer shop assistant, now 24, continues to be monitored at the unit and does as much as she can to raise awareness of its great work.

On Sunday, her dad Mitch and his colleagues from Leeds Commericial Vehicle Hire’s Yorkshire depot ran the Leeds 10K to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Unit.

Mitch, an operations manager, said: “When your daughter is diagnosed with breast cancer, it turns everything to turmoil.

“You could not have wished for anything more from the unit when your daughter goes through something like that.”

Leanne said: “I couldn’t of got through the past year and a half without the unit, from the specialist nurses to the doctors. They made a very difficult time seem somewhat bearable.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed that LC Vehicle Hire wanted to raise money for the charity, I can’t express how much this means to my family.”

The Teenage Cancer Unit sees patients from across the region who are aged 16 to 25. In addition to medical therapies, it organises day trips, cinema visits and luxury toiletries for the wards as well as encouraging social integration between families and parents.

Mitch and his colleagues aim to raise £10,000 for the unit over the course of this year.
