Yorkshire folk have more than 50 million £1 coins - but they will soon be worthless unless you spend them

Yorkshire residents have more than 50 million £1 coins stashed away in piggy banks, jars and purses - but they will soon be worthless unless you spend them.

The old round £1 coins will become obsolete on October 15 this year as they make way for a new look 12-sided £1 coin that is being launched on March 28.

New figures from YouGov found Yorkshire and the Humber residents have more than 50 million £1 round coins - and the Royal Mint is now urging people to spend them or return them to the bank.

The Royal Mint is currently producing 1.5 billion new £1 coins at a rate of up to 2,000 each minute and a staggering three million in total every day. The old coins will be melted down and used to make the new ones.

Baroness Neville Rolfe, commercial secretary to the Treasury, said: "We are urging the public to dig out their rounds pounds from coat pockets, handbags and down the back of sofas, in order to spend or return them before October 15."
