Drivers in Yorkshire are being urged to take extra care on the roads after the Highways Agency warned that winds could reach 65mph.

The Highways Agency is advising road users across the North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber that gales are expected from tonight, Wednesday, April 17, and into tomorrow morning.

They have issued an amber alert warning drivers that high winds - particularly affecting road users driving high-sided vehicles, riding motorcycles or towing caravans – are forecast for between 11pm tonight and 10am tomorrow.

Drivers, including commuters setting out during the morning peak travel period, are being urged to check traffic and weather conditions before setting out on journeys and to heed any advice such as speed restrictions once they are on the strategic roads network.

Met Office forecasters based in the Agency’s National Traffic Operations Centre are predicting west to south westerly gusts of between 60mph and 65mph are likely to arrive in Cumbria from about 11pm tonight before developing right across the north from around midnight.

Guy Huckle, regional emergency planning manager for the Highways Agency in the North East, said: “We advise road users to plan their journeys, check road conditions and weather forecasts before travelling and to allow extra time to complete their journeys.

“We are advising motorcyclists, drivers of high sided vehicles and people towing caravans to avoid certain routes if possible, as there is a risk of being blown over in these locations.

“Our traffic officers and maintenance contractors across the north are constantly monitoring the network and are ready to respond to any incidents.”
