A grandma says she is scared to go outside after dark as a street light near her home has been broken for weeks.

Margaret Wheeler, aged 83, said many elderly people living on Maltravers Road, Wybourn, feared for their safety as gangs of youths would loiter on the street at night.

A gas street light outside her home has been broken for more than two weeks.

Margaret said: “A lot of elderly people live around here and I’m frightened to come out, even to go to the bin because it is that dark.

“There are a lot of groups stood out there every night and you can’t see a thing.

“When I called up the council to complain all I was told was that they couldn’t get hold of an electrician.”

Sheffield Council contractor Streets Ahead has now informed Northern Powergrid - which is responsible for power in homes and businesses across Yorkshire - of the problem.

Engineers were due to visit the street light yesterday to examine the problem.

A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said: “We were advised on Friday December 19 by Amey that three streetlights are not working on Maltravers Road. “Our engineers will be visiting Mrs Wheeler’s street on Monday to investigate the cause so that we can organise a repair.

“We thank Mrs Wheeler for reporting the issue and would encourage residents who spotany streetlights that aren’t working to report them.”
