HERO soldier Ben Parkinson has been signed up as ambassador for an athletics contest involving disabled South Yorkshire residents.

Ben, from Doncaster, is the most severely wounded British soldier to survive injuries from a Taliban bomb in Afghanistan.

He will perform the role at the Rotary District Disability Games in Barnsley next April.

To promote the contest, Ben is appearing at a dinner organised by Barnsley Rockley Rotary Club at the Holiday Inn, Barnsley, on the evening of Wednesday, September 19.

Rotary club spokeswoman Kathy Markwick said: “Ben and his physio will do a presentation and show everyone that being disabled is definitely not the end of the world.

“In Ben’s own words, there is nothing he will not do or try.”

Tickets are £15 each and include a three course meal and raffle ticket.

Organisers are also seeking sponsors for the event.
