Worrying statistics lead to Get Safer Online appeal

Individuals and small businesses in Derbyshire are being urged to be safer online, as part of a new campaign.

The appeal follows recent figures from Get Safe Online and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau which have revealed how £13.8 million was lost in the county as a result of fraud, including cybercrime, throughout 2015/16.

he research also showed a gap in people’s understanding of what constitutes an online crime - 88 per cent of people who took part in the survey from the East Midlands said that they had not been targeted by cybercriminals in the past 12 months, despite 73 per cent being targeted via fraudulent emails, 30 percent being contacted by someone who was trying to trick them into giving away personal information, and nine percent having their email or social media accounts hacked.
