World Wheelie Championship kicks off in Yorkshire

Riding on the back wheel for a kilometre at over 200mph is the goal of motorcyclists bidding to be the wheelie world champion.

Thousands of spectators gathered at the motorcycle World Wheelie Championship at the weekend to see participants ride powerful customised motorbikes as they competed to be crowned champion.

Nearly 30 top competitors from the USA, UK, France, Holland and Ireland gathered at Elvington Airfield in North Yorkshire to compete for the world title. The top wheelie riders at the event included the previous record holder Gary Rothwell, from England, who achieved a 209mph wheelie in 2015, Egbert Van Popta from Holland and Paddy O’Sullivan from Ireland. Dave ‘Dodge’ Rogers represented the UK.
