World Cup hero Sir Geoff hits the bar again ... 41 years on

WORLD Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst rattled the cross bar - and the ball bounced back out again.

Luckily, this time the venue was Doncaster in 2007 rather than Wembley in 1966 and Sir Geoff was playing with youngsters taking part in the McDonald's Football Festival Tour at Hall Cross Lower School, Bessacarr.

Sir Geoff hit the woodwork while taking part in a shooting skills section of the event which offered free football coaching to borough youngsters.

It was a reminder of his controversial goal in the 1966 World Cup Final against West Germany which bounced back off the crossbar and was judged to have just crossed the goal line. It has been a football talking point ever since.

Kelly Dayus-Cook from Doncaster Rovers who organised the Bessacarr event said: "Geoff really enjoyed the day and played football with some of the youngsters - I think the parents were more excited than the children!"

In all, 320 youngsters turned out for the Doncaster event, delighting organisers.

They took part in coaching for heading and foot skills as well as shooting.

And was that shot that hit the cross bar in the final at Wembley a goal? "It was certainly a goal," said Sir Geoff.
