Work has begun on the building of new student flats in Sheffield city centre.

The 63-bedroom scheme is being built on Trippet Lane and is expected to be finished by July 2017 in time for the 2017/18 academic year.

The site, which was the former home of a building called Birch Hall, has been cleared ahead of construction work beginning in earnest.

Leeds-based property firm KMRE Group has completed a £5.45m funding contract for the development with client Empiric Student Property.

Kam Mogul, managing director of KMRE, said: “The student accommodation sector in Sheffield has remained buoyant, particularly in prime locations within the city.

“There have been numerous challenges to overcome but we are delighted to have our chosen contractor start on site having now completed the demolition and extensive archaeological program in conjunction with Sheffield City Council.”

The development is one of a series of planned new student flats and apartments that are due to be built in Sheffield.

Among them is a 21-storey apartment block for more than 400 students being planned for currently empty land by the Jurys Inn hotel at Furnival Square, close to The Moor, while a major new development for almost 450 students is on the cards for land off Ecclesall Road.

Sheffield is home to almost 60,000 students at its two universities – which both have expansion plans and are in the process of upgrading their existing campus facilities.
