Doncaster councillors unanimously agreed to make a compulsory purchase order to acquire more land to allow phase two of the Finningley And Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme, FARRRS, to progress at yesterday’s cabinet meeting.

The order was necessary after it was found more land was required for the link road development than originally anticipated following in-depth environmental surveys.

Councillors were told the ‘slight changes’ to the FARRRS boundaries would not significantly affect the scheme’s cost. A report for the meeting said: “Completion of the overall FARRRS project will improve access to the airport and surrounding business park and employment opportunities.

“This will further increase the prosperity of Doncaster as an attractive and vibrant place to work and live.”

Councillors also backed a recommendation not to include a link to Warning Tongue Lane, near Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as part of phase two after experts warned it could cause a ‘potential delay and disruption’ for the rest of the scheme.

Planners said although a link to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park would not form part of phase two it could be on the cards as part of a future development to improve connectivity to the popular park.

Work is set to get underway on phase 2 by the end of October or beginning of November and is expected to take around 14 months to complete.

Phase one of the scheme – the Great Yorkshire Way – opened in February.

Councillors at the meeting were told the Great Yorkshire Way scooped the Infrastructure ‘Project of the Year’ title at the Construction Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber Awards on Friday.

Mayor Ros Jones said: “I am delighted at the progress of the scheme and this will be the final part to take people right through to the airport and enhance what we already have. It is great to see the scheme winning awards. FARRRS is playing a key part in the regeneration of this borough.”

The ‘transformational’ £56m, three-mile stretch of road between the M18 and Doncaster Sheffield Airport is set to create some 20,000 jobs and bring up to £1.7bn of investment, council chiefs say.

It slashes journey times from Sheffield to 30 minutes and puts 6.2m people within an hour’s drive of the airport.

The project has led to a predicted 50 per cent growth at the airport already this year.

A £400m ‘inland port’ – a 350-acre railhead and warehousing complex – and hundreds of homes are being built on sites which join the new route.
