Work began today to fill in the two mine shafts at Hatfield Colliery as part of the Coal Authority’s public safety responsibilities.
Colliery spoil from Ashfield Tip will be used as part of the fill material, along with stone and clay.
Work is expected to take around ten weeks.
Simon Reed, Chief Operating Officer of the Coal Authority, said: “We are carrying out these works to ensure public safety around the mine shafts. Once the shafts have been filled we will cover them with robust temporary covers.
“We would usually install permanent concrete caps at this stage, but doing so would have required the headgear to be demolished to allow the work to be undertaken.
“By installing these temporary covers, designed specifically for this site, we have recognised the local interest in maintaining the headgear at Hatfield.”
