Women in local government

THE contribution of women to local government is celebrated in a new exhibition.

Called The Thin End of the Wedge: Women Councillors in Yorkshire and the Humber, the display is at the Winter Garden in Sheffield until December 20.

It features a number of female councillors from Sheffield’s different political parties who were interviewed for the project and is based on research over the last century by The Centre For Women & Democracy.

Lord Mayor of Sheffield Coun Dunkley, who arranged for the exhibition to be on display in the Winter Garden, said: “It is well worth a look to find out about some of the fascinating and inspirational women who have been involved in local government over the years, from the election of Yorkshire’s first woman councillor in 1918 through to the present day.”
