Woman rescued from Sheffield river after 20ft fall

A woman has been taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries after 'falling backwards' 20ft off a wall into a Sheffield river.

Firefighters from Central station were called to a section of the River Don around 11.45pm on Friday night on Mowbray Street near the Kelham Island area.

The woman, aged 25, was taken to Northern General Hospital after she was rescued from the river bank.

Fire crews had to gain access to the river bank through the cellar of The Riverside pub and then had to wade through thick vegetation to get to the injured woman.

"We believe a woman, aged 25 had fallen backwards off a wall from around 20ft last night," a South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesman said.

"We considered calling a specialist rescue team due to the difficultly of reaching the woman, but we managed to gain access to the river through the pub cellar door and onto the river bank.

"We had to then remove a lot of vegetation and get round thick trees to gain access to the woman - we had to walk around 100 metres to get to her."

Fire crews then had to pull the injured woman on a specialist rescue board back through the vegetation and through the busy pub where paramedics took over.
