A YOUNG woman has died after plunging from the roof of an indoor shopping complex in a South Yorkshire town centre.
The woman, who was in her early 20s, has not yet been named by police.
Concerned passers-by spotted the woman on the roof of the Alhambra Centre in Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.
Officers were called at around 2.15pm as worries were raised by shoppers for her safety.
Tragically, a South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the woman died a short time afterwards, ‘after falling from the roof’.
An investigation into the circumstances of the death is under way, but South Yorkshire Police said is not being treated as suspicious.
The shopping centre was closed briefly on Saturday afternoon while investigations were carried out.
An inquest is to be held.
Meanwhile police in Sheffield were called to Herries Road, Shirecliffe, yesterday morning over concerns for the safety of a man spotted sitting on a high bridge spanning the road.
The man was seen perched on the Five Arches Bridge by passing motorists, and officers received reports from witnesses concerned for the man’s safety at 11.11am.
Police had to close off a section of Herries Road while they dealt with the incident.
But specialist officers managed to talk the man down by noon. He was taken to safety.
