A WOMAN has died after being thrown down an embankment when she was hit by a car.

The 53-year-old pedestrian was struck by a green Toyota Yaris travelling on Tyler Street, Wincobank, yesterday, at about 7.20am.

Police say the car is believed to have ‘mounted the offside kerb’ and collided with the woman.

Firefighters were called to rescue the pedestrian, who had landed 15ft down the embankment between the road and railway line below.

She sustained fatal injuries.

A 49-year-old Sheffield woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The road was closed while the rescue was carried out by firefighters. The female driver of the Yaris was unhurt.

South Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident and witnesses are being asked to come forward.
