Witness plea over police car collision

WITNESSES are being sought to the accident in which a 40-year-old Barnsley man was hit by a police car and critically injured.

Officials said today there has been a slight improvement in the married man’s condition but he remains critically ill in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission wants to hear from anyone who may have seen the collision which happened at around 12.15am on Sunday.

Two West Yorkshire Police officers were dealing with a dispute between a taxi driver and his passengers on the A61 Wakefield - Barnsley Road, near Barnsley Golf Course.

A South Yorkshire Police van containing two police officers and two passengers was travelling along the A61 in the direction of Wakefield when it collided with two of the people being spoken to by the West Yorkshire Police officers.

The 40-year-old Barnsley man was critically injured and his 36-year-old wife sustained a badly broken leg and facial injuries and is currently in Barnsley Hospital.

The two officers in the South Yorkshire Police vehicle and the two West Yorkshire Police officers were treated for shock.

The IPCC is now conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

Nicholas Long, IPCC Commissioner for Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “Our investigation is at an early stage and would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

“The investigation will be looking all aspects of the incident to determine what happened. My thoughts are with the man and his wife and I hope they both make a full recovery.”
