POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a motorist died when it is believed she lost control of her car on the M1 near Sheffield.

The woman’s silver Vauxhall Corsa car crossed the hard shoulder, slid down an embankment and collided with trees before overturning.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The silver Vauxhall Corsa was travelling northbound, half a mile south of J31, when the driver appears to have lost control with the car leaving the carriageway to the nearside.

“The Corsa crossed the hard shoulder, sliding down a banking and colliding with trees before ending on its roof.”

The incident happened just after 5.40am yesterday.

The driver, a 52-year-old Hartlepool woman, sustained fatal head and chest injuries.

A 40-year-old Scottish man, a passenger in the Corsa, sustained minor cuts and bruises that required treatment at the Northern General Hospital.

Anyone with information about the incident should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 239 of Sunday, April 8.
