What an astounding letter from Steve Ayris regarding libraries. It just goes to show how little he understands about the financial constraints placed on our city by Nick Clegg and his Government.
There is no denying that the council generated a surplus in the financial years ending March 2011 and 2012.
There’s no denying that the council has been forced to reduce its budget by close to £200m since Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems went in to coalition with the Tories in Government in 2010 and sanctioned savage cuts on local government.
Does former Lib Dem councillor Ayris really think that every service funded by the council can continue without change in the face of these cuts?
In the last couple of years we have tried to limit the impact of these reductions on front-line services.
It is very regrettable to have to reduce any service, whether it’s libraries, leisure facilities or support to the voluntary, faith and community sector.
The stark reality is that with reduced funding comes reduced services. The council will need to make further savings and the Government has confirmed this will be greater than expected because of their failed economic record.
Mr Ayris could help by asking his national leader, Nick Clegg, to stand up for Sheffield and say enough is enough.
